What is it that makes your work/company unique
EVERYBODY KNOWS is a moody and evocative show set to nine Leonard Cohen cover songs. In this semi-autobiographical, one-Woman musical, I create a spiraling narrative using contemporary dance, post-modern quirk, and the haunting melodies of First Aid Kit.
This show is the result of 30 years of fandom. I have been a massive Leonard Cohen fan since I was 12 from back in the day when we listened on a tape. I used to go to the to the Southgate Mall public library in Edmonton and put everything on hold, the sheet music, the books, anything to do with Leonard Cohen.
What kind of experience do you hope audiences will have during your show?
I want to pull apart every word and phrase of poetry and movement, to examine it and to find solace and context in our lives. Or sing along. Laugh and clap and cry and cheer. It’s a visceral and smug show of the human experience through LC’s eyes. Anything goes.
Without spoilers, tell us what you think audiences will remember most about your show?
Famous Blue Raincoat — an epic storytelling experience of a profound love triangle.
What do you think is the best thing about the Fringe?
Experiencing other festival artists in their element of genius— it’s my favorite thing to watch. I am majorly inspired by their commitment to the craft. I feel my performances get better throughout the festival, as I go see more shows by other artists. It’s a special kind of euphoria and admiration to be surrounded by that level of artistry.
What is the most important thing you hope audiences will take away from your show?
The beauty of Leonard Cohen’s words; something that resonates within and connects us to each other.
