60 Seconds With…The Daring Creatives From ‘WROL-Without Rule of Law’

Taking place in one of the most unique site-specific venues, you’ll want to check this show out!

Briefly introduce yourself/your company…

I’m a director and arts educator who is driven by great stories, rich language, and indelible characters. Rough Magic is an ad hoc company that emerges from hibernation whenever I find a story that needs to be shared. The Vancouver Fringe Festival is Rough Magic’s first outing in Canada (and first since the pandemic) and we’re excited to bring Michaela Jeffery’s indelible story to life here.

What is it that makes your work/company unique?

My work tends to be very heavily centered on language and story-telling, with a deeper, hidden darkness that takes a while to tease out.

What kind of experience do you hope audiences will have during your show?

I hope they feel immersed in the world of “The Pit,” the squat where the play takes place – in all of its spooky, liminal, implicitly possible, campfire story richness.

Without spoilers, tell us what you think audiences will remember most about your show…

When I first read WROL, I was haunted by it. Weeks later, I found myself returning to specific moments and characters and turning them over and over in my mind. My deepest wish is for audiences to have the same experience I had – to leave the show bewildered, contemplative, empowered, and returning to their encounter with the show again and again.

How do you feel about participating in the 40th anniversary of the Vancouver Fringe!?

I’m thrilled to be part of this anniversary year! The Fringe produces some of the most exciting theatre around, and we’re overjoyed to be part of it!

Tickets for ‘WROL-Without Rule of Law’ are on sale now, taking place at The Parking Lot on Johnston from 5 – 15 Sep. Book your spot today for just $17 per person!
