The musically-minded married couple shares their excitement about returning to the Vancouver Fringe.
Briefly introduce yourself/your company…
We (CVM & Reid Jamieson) are local Vancouver songbirds aiming to make music that matters and moves you. Reid was a Vinyl Cafe regular who has recorded with Cowboy Junkies and other fine folks, while I (CVM) am a late-blooming lyricist who simply cannot keep my mouth shut about injustices in this world. Our approach to vocals and vibes is unpredictable yet somehow still appealing to a wide audience. “Gorgeous, sun-struck acoustic soul” if you can believe the Globe & Mail!
What is it that makes your work/company unique?
As a married couple together over 22 years, we have a deep connection to each other and our songs – still madly in love even. Together we have won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, wrote our way into the Vancouver Folk Festival, and won the Social impact award for our first run of this show – you could call us competitive songwriters. This project is a little daring on a few fronts due to the topic, and is our first ever attempt at theatre of any kind. This will be only the second ever run of the show, so we are far from the experienced Fringe folks we so admire.
What kind of experience do you hope audiences will have during your show?
Because of the way we bounce between the often comedic praising of pigeons, to the eye opening stats on homelessness, to the soaring glory of live music, our aim is to captivate the audience with a show where time flies while yer having a musical social justice moment.
Without spoilers, tell us what you think audiences will remember most about your show…
Well, they will never look at a pigeon the same way! And hopefully they will also see themselves (or someone they love) in the people they pass on the street. But mostly the powerful emotions that the songs will leave folks with…music can be a safe place to feel…and by singing these stories we hope to make them easier to hear.
How do you feel about participating in the 40th anniversary of the Vancouver Fringe!?
Super stoked! Last year was our first Fringe ever…and it was the most supported we have ever felt as artists. The perfect place to take creative risks, plus a boatload of incredible performances for us to explore between shows – we could not be more excited to get our Fringe on
